BASE STATION SYSTEM (BSS) / WCDMA RADIO ACCESS NETWORK
(WCDMA RAN)
The
Base Station System (BSS) and the WCDMA Radio Access Network (WCDMA RAN) consists
of the functional units described in the following sections.
Base Station (BS)
A
Base Transceiver Station (BTS) is the GSM radio equipment required to serve one
cell. It contains the antenna system, radio frequency power amplifiers and
digital signaling equipment. The
Ericsson
product for the BTS is the Base Station (BS).
The
system versions are:
• BS 2000
for GSM 900, GSM 1800, and GSM 1900
• BS 200
for GSM 900 and GSM 1800
Node B
A
node B is the WCDMA SYSTEMS radio equipment required to serve one cell. It
contains the antenna system, radio frequency power amplifiers, and digital
signaling equipment.
The
system versions are:
• RBS 3000 for WCDMA RAN
Base Station Controller (BSC)
The
BSC controls and supervises a number of BSs and radio connections in the
system. It handles the administration of cell data and the locating algorithm,
as well as ordering handovers.
The
node is based on the Ericsson Digital Switching System AXE 10 switch.
Radio Network Controller (RNC)
The
RNC houses radio network control functions, such as connection establishment
and release, handover, power control, and radio resource handling functions.
Diversity combining devices and the radio link functions will also be located
in the RNC.
The
node is based on Ericsson’s new generic ATM switch infrastructure, which
handles packet based traffic cost effectively.
